Sea View Cottages in Falmouth

The port of Falmouth sits behind the third deepest natural harbour in the world. With sandy beaches and winding estuaries, there are few places that offer a more waterborne holiday experience. Needless to say, sea view accommodation in Falmouth is abundant with houses, cottages and apartments overlooking the water in some fantastic positions.

In 1600, when Falmouth was known as 'Smithwick' or 'Pny-cwm-cuic' (pronounced 'Penny-come-quick') it was comprised of just a few significant buildings, including Arwenack manor, home to Sir John Killegrew. When Sir Walter Raleigh visited him in 1598 he was so excited by its geographical position that he suggest it ought to be developed as a port. Killegrew followed his advice, creating the town of Falmouth in 1613 and so beginning 400 years of maritime history.

It was Henry VIII who, knowing the great strategic importance of the Carrick Roads (the main body of the Fal Estaury), commissioned the building of two castles. One at St Mawes and one at Pendennis, both of which still stand today and are open to the public. Pendennis castle was the second to last Royalist stronghold to surrender to Parlimentary forces during the Civil War, enduring a six month siege and earning its brave 900 soldiers and officers full honours of war and a dignified surrender as they were allowed to march out from the castle 'with colours flying, trumpets sounding' and 'drums beating'.

These days, Falmouth's unique mixture of locals, sailing enthusiasts and growing student population, combined with its rich heritage and stunning surroundings, make it one of the most vibrant and energetic destinations in Cornwall. As a resident myself, I can tell you that there is always something going on – from Falmouth Week in August, which sees world class sailing accompanied by an explosion of live music, to the Oyster Festival in October, which celebrates not only the the start of the oyster season but Cornish seafood in general.

With water lapping at your toes, it is of course perfect place to get out onto the blue stuff. You just need to decide if you'll be going by sailing boat, kayak, paddle board or waterski.
