This modern wooden cabin sits on the site of the original cabin belonging to Captain Alexander James "Seamus Dubh." This is on the site of Black Jimmy Maclenzie’s original cabin. "Dubh" means black in Gaelic and is the name of the present friendly dog on Dry Island. He built the original cabin after he retired from a life time at sea. He made the long sea journey from Badachro to Europe too many times to count. He wanted to see out the last of days where he could watch the tide come in and out. But also could not see the boats leaving without him. He passed his time distilling whisky. He used an illegal still. He got his barley from his son who farmed across the waters at Aird, near where Dry Island car park is now. His barrels came from the Cooper (barrel maker) who lived on Dry Island too. His Uisqe Beathe (Water of Life) must have been good as he lived until he was ninety-seven! Some of the artefacts in the Captain’s Cabin come from those times c.1850.

We hope you will be as happy as he was when he lived on this spot. So if you do have a dram, please raise a glass to the spirit of Seamus Dubh.

Pay half in advance and the remainder on arrival. Unfortunately the cabin is not suitable for those with walking difficulties as there is a rough 10 min walk from our private bridge, over the unique floating bridge to the cabin.
