Description

Delightful cottage with decking leading down to the seashore, wonderful for nature lovers, with seals, deer and golden eagle in the area.. With superb views across the Inner Sound to the Inner Hebridean Islands of Raasay, Rona and Skye, this 19th-century holiday cottage has been architecturally renovated to a high standard, and has its own landscaped garden with decking leading down to the seashore.

Set amidst some of Scotland’s most dramatic and rugged scenery, Applecross nestles between mountains and sea and is approached over the spectacular Bealach na Ba (the ‘Pass of the Cattle’), one of Britain’s highest road passes. Wester Ross has long been considered one of the more remote corners of the British mainland – and is still known as a haven of enormous beauty and tranquillity; Applecross was declared a sanctuary in 673 AD by the Irish monk Maelrubha. The region is home to the golden eagle and pine marten – and the last remnants of the ancient Caledonian pine forest. To the north is the Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve (Torridon mountains) where the NTS Countryside Centre provides opportunity to explore the flora, fauna and history of this sheltered fertile area amidst some of the oldest geological formations in Britain. Also north of the Applecross Peninsula are the world-famous sub-tropical Inverewe Gardens, and to the south the picturesque NTS village of Plockton and the Isle of Skye.

The area provides excellent coastal walks and abundant wildlife – seals are frequently seen in the indented coastline, and stags roam the heather-clad hillsides of the Applecross Peninsula. More occasionally porpoises and even the mysterious profile of a submarine lurks in the Inner Sound. Rockpools left behind by the tide provide a great variety of creatures for children to discover. Beautiful sandy bay within 5 miles (see bottom photograph). Mountaineering, kayaking and landrover trips can be arranged locally. The award winning Applecross Inn, renowned for its locally caught seafood and convivial hospitality, is just 10-minutes walk away. Shop 1 mile.. Spacious panelled and beamed living/dining room with large wood burner and rugs on carpeted floor. Well-equipped kitchen. Utility/drying room. Twin bedroom with en-suite bathroom and toilet. First floor: Three bedrooms with combed ceilings, two with open beamed ceilings; two double, each with en-suite shower room and toilet, and one twin with en-suite shower room and toilet..

Guest Comments

"Absolutely excellent on all fronts: calm, peaceful, beautiful, walks, canoeing, nice food and wild nature. Can't be beaten. House excellent, fire a really bonus. Good wifi connection from house so could keep up with other commitments, although mobile phone signal only on hill behind. But there is a house phone. Nearby walled garden also does an excellent breakfast!"

Elaine, July 2021

"Just spent a relaxing week in this lovely, comfortable and spacious cottage. Situated in the bay with access directly onto the rocky shore from the garden, we couldn't have picked a better location in Applecross. Facilities within the cottage were ideal and felt very much a home from home."

Margaret, July 2021

"Had a lovely week at this cottage which is in a stunning location overlooking Applecross bay. The cottage is very well equipped. It has a lovely front garden with it's own gate to the pebbly beach and plenty of garden furniture to be able to sit out and enjoy watching the sun go down. 5 minute walk from the great Applecross Inn, and only 20 minute walk from the Applecross Walled garden. We saw red deer on our way there and back a number of times. Great walks and fantastic views"

Liz, June 2021

"Stunning location and although the weather was rather cold for May we had a great time. Good walks and cycling plus the Applecross Inn was as welcoming as ever despite Covid"

Jane, June 2021

"Lovely cottage with stunning views . If weather had been better the garden area would have been well used . We look forward to a return visit"

Val, May 2021

Sue , November 2020

"Absolutely beautiful house in a very special place. Perfectly named as Sanctuary Cottage. Brilliant , brilliant cottage, unable to fault. Lovely places to eat, beautiful wildlife. Be sure to shop before you go or arrange home delivery well in advance if you wish to cook whilst there. If you are not able there is a lovely deli at Torridon approximately 1 hr away well stocked with basics and fresh fruit and veg. A true retreat "

Kate, November 2020

"Excellent holiday cottage. Very clean and tidy. Very well resourced and comfortable. A real home from home."

Annabel, October 2020

"The cottage is very well equipped for self catering . It is comfortable and clean with a coal and wood burning stove for colder weather /evenings . We enjoyed spectacular views from the private garden leading on the shore ."

Lorna, September 2020

"Utterly stunning house and location. Peaceful, wildlife-rich surroundings. Awesome views from the house and garden. The mountain pass to reach the property is not for the fainthearted. The local shop is very well stocked but because of the remote location it is understandably expensive. Do your big shop before you go!"
