Oystercatcher is a traditional stone fishing cottage, adjacent to the owners’ home, situated just yards from the stunning sandy bay of Embo in picturesque Sutherland. This pretty terraced cottage has been in the same family since it was built in the 1900’s. It has been refurbished and now provides warm, welcoming accommodation in a quiet lane that leads directly onto the beach. The pretty living room is attractively presented, with a three piece suite, whilst the kitchen/dining room is located at the rear of the cottage. It is bright and modern with built-in units and very well equipped. The back door leads out to a lovely courtyard garden with garden furniture. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, all prettily presented, sleeping up to five guests. A modern family sized bathroom completes the picture.

Embo is a small, mainly stone village that historically looks to the sea for its livelihood. These days the wide sandy beach with pretty small harbour is popular with visitors wishing to enjoy the totally unspoilt seaside location. There is a small village store, and from Easter to October the nearby holiday site has the facilities of a restaurant and bar which is open to all. There is a superb walk along the beach to the adjoining village of Dornoch, famous for its championship golf course and 13th-century cathedral, which dominates the village centre. Made of mellow sandstone with beautiful stained glass windows, it is well worth a visit. There are a good variety of unusual and interesting shops here as well as excellent restaurants and bars. The region is designated as a National Scenic Area, with wonderful wildlife and fascinating historical sites. On the edge of Embo is Loch Fleet, which has a myriad of bird life as well as seals and some wonderful nature walks. Fishing can also be found nearby. Just a short drive away is Dunrobin Castle, seat of the Dukes of Sutherland for over 600 years. Visitors are welcome to explore the castle and grounds, which were modelled on the Palace of Versailles. Situated just off the route of the renowned North Coast 500, which encompasses some of the most scenic sites to be found anywhere in the British Isles, Oystercatcher makes an ideal base for exploring the whole of the Highland region. Beach 200 yards. Shop 400 yards, pub 500 yards (Apr-Oct), restaurant 3 miles.

Guest Comments

"Peaceful location. Overall a very good stay with friendly owners next door. Spacious and light kitchen. Given the Scottish temperatures the instant heating was welcome.Wonderful to have a beautiful beach on the doorstep and if you are brave enough, a good swim can be had. Good location for exploring the area, especially Loch Fleet and Dornoch."

"Fiona and William were lovely hosts - leaving us to our own devices, yet always happy to help, saying hello each time we encountered them. They provided us with a welcome gift of white wine, shortbread and biscuits, which was much-appreciated. Most importantly, during these Covid times, the cottage was spotlessly clean. The house was equipped with everything you could possibly want - including even a dishwasher, and a bowl under the sink for washing our sandy feet upon returning from the beach! The whole holiday was wonderful - and not just because of the location, sunny hot weather and maximum beach time! Thank you so much to our lovely hosts - we will definitely be booking to come back again (and probably so will our friends and family!)"

"Oystercatcher is a lovely comfy house, traditional and spotlessly clean and a stone's throw from the beach. The owners made us very welcome and we had a very relaxing weeks holiday. Dornoch is only a couple of miles away with plenty of amenities whilst Embo is quiet. We hope to return next year."

"Stayed at Oyster Catcher from 1/5 for a week. It was a lovely house with everything that you needed for a comfortable stay. Good to get away after 4 months in lockdown. Owners stayed next door who were always happy to help you and very friendly. May go back sometime in the future."
