The lounge runs the length of the cottage. With the original high ceilings, large windows and Victorian fireplace, this superb room has a warm, welcoming ambience and provides plenty of space for guests to sit and admire the view whilst enjoying a wee dram or two in front of the open fire. There is a large double bedroom with a super king sized bed, a twin room and a small third bedroom with bunk beds for two children. They are all attractively presented with colour co-ordinated soft furnishings. The gardens are a real delight, with a stone slab path leading up through the flower beds to a garden seat from which there are spectacular views across the bay to Handa Island and the Outer Isles. The mountains of Foinavon, Ben Stack and Arkle are also visible.

The immediate area is haven for outdoor enthusiasts and lovers of the great outdoors generally. Hill walking, climbing, canoeing, kayaking and sailing are all local activities. There is a thriving pony trekking centre in the nearby village of Sheigra, with rides amidst spectacular scenery. Fishing in the surrounding lochs and rivers as well as sea fishing is a popular pastime. The area is also a haven for wildlife, with seals and otters in the bay and numerous varieties of birds attracted to the region.

The beaches in this area are renowned. Sandwood Bay is particularly noted, with a wonderful walk across the machair to its secluded sweeping sands. The nearby beaches of Oldshoremore and Polin are also renowned for their unspoilt beauty. Kinlochbervie is the nearest main village. The most northerly port on the west coast of Scotland, this pretty village has an active working harbour and offers good local facilities, including a shop and post office, as well as a hotel with restaurant open all year to non-residents for meals.

“Wonderful relaxing holiday. Although the weather was pretty unpleasant the cottage was very comfortable a real home from home! We managed some lovely walks and saw the Highlands at their worst thanks to Storm Arwen. This was our second visit and we would definitely recommend the cottage it was spotless, warm and welcoming. Everyone obviously works hard to make it right for visitors.”

“Been to the Old School House a few times always a joy. Everything you really need included though I'd recommend taking an extra towel or two. Local environment out of this world. Local shop in Kinlochbervie for bits and pieces. A special place.”

“A taste of grand living in the sitting room (formerly the schoolroom) with super fire and generous supply of fuel. We were so grateful that this family home is being shared for visitors who rent; there are many touches of this being a home, not a commercial property. SUMPTUOUS bedding, for those who notice such luxuries! If 'local amenities' are walks, sights of nature, rocky coves and beaches to explore then it deserves top marks. Thankfully for us, we got AWAY from pubs and tourists.Huge gratitude to owners.”

“We stayed for a week and were lucky to have good weather for the most of it. We had young children with us and Oldshore more beach so close to the house was so handy, a trip to Polin beach, lovely and sheltered is very much worth a visit. The Old School House has a beautiful large and comfy sitting room with the most amazing views. It has everything you need to make your stay fabulous. Thankyou too for the welcome pack, lovely goodies and much appreciated. Would definitely book this cottage again. Loved it.”

“Wonderful cottage..beautiful area. Fantastic if you want a get away from it all holiday. Only noise you hear is the sheep and the odd car. Beaches are lovely with very few people on them. Will definitely come back.”

“Loved the area, beaches and scenery. The old school was a lovely property, full of character whilst being very cosy. The open fire was very much enjoyed. The shower and bath need a refresh as does the grill and pans. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there.”

“The Old School House is lovely property very warm and cozy and set in beautiful location The only thing that we were disappointed with was the lack of kitchen itemsWe had no kitchen hand towels no kitchen rollNo kitchen foilcling filmA shortage of microwave cooking dishes Things like washing machine tablets were in very short supply and some of the pots and pans have seen better days”

“This is a lovely house in a spectacular location. 3 beautiful wild sandy beaches within walking distance, 2 only 15 minutes walk. The house itself is sensitively restored with a lot of love and charm, the schoolroom itself a fabulous, large room with windows on all four walls, giving beautiful views of the coastline.”
