The Oval in Dunster a historically fascinating and quirky cottage dating from 1366, and it is one of the oldest buildings in Dunster! Beautifully upgraded, furnished and decorated whilst retaining period charm, history, wonky floors, ancient timbers, leaded windows, low lintels, and cruck beams, all of which make this cottage so special.

The heavy timber door off historic West Street, opens into an oak-screened entrance hall with space for muddy wellies, coats, and wet dogs. A comfortable and spacious sitting room with an original medieval fireplace with wood burning stove, Smart HDTV/DVD/Netflix and BT WIFI. Across the hall, a separate sitting room, The Snug, is perfect for quiet reading and contemplation, in comfortable easy chairs. The smart oak-fitted kitchen features a washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer, and a new range style dual fuel cooker. There is a separate utility room with tumble drier, iron and ironing board, sink, a handy downstairs cloakroom, with extra space for outdoor coats and boots. A dining room with country pine furniture and French windows, leads out onto a private courtyard with table and chairs, and steps to a sun-deck recently styled with new contemporary furniture, offers excellent views across the village and Exmoor.

Upstairs there are three bedrooms that can accommodate up to six guests. The master bedroom features a stately double four-poster bed and a new shower-room with jet shower, which can be accessed from the hallway for the occupants of the twin room. A second double bedroom with brass style bed, and en-suite bathroom with over the bath shower. The twin room completes the trio, all of which accommodate six guests in sublime comfort.

The bedrooms are beautifully furnished with good fabrics, high quality beds and mattresses, and each retain the features of a bygone age: ancient cruck beams, vaulted ceilings, and a window seat.

Quality linen and towels are included in the price, and stair gates, high-chairs, and travel cots are available on request.

Parking is reserved for two cars. A permit is provided for our designated parking space in the National Trust car park with a further space in a private car park, 450 yards away. The Oval also welcomes up to two dogs for a 30 GBP supplement per dog, and dog beds and bowls are supplied.

The Oval is perfectly located in the medieval village of Dunster, on Exmoor National Park. A short walk along cobbled streets, leads to a variety of independent shops, cafes, traditional pubs, award-winning restaurants, fascinating listed buildings, gardens, an iconic Yarn Market, and a fairy-tale castle atop a hill. Dunster Beach, the Heritage Steam Railway, and the Victorian seaside town of Minehead are nearby.

The property offers a range of practical information, with games, toys, and books for indoor enjoyment, and our recommended short walks and places to visit, are provided in our Little Book of Walks. And Exmoor National Park is an International Dark Sky Reserve and one of the best places in England to see the stars in the night sky.
