Gardener's Cottage

Sleeps 2

Tucked away within the ancient walls of Cardigan Castle, Gardener’s Cottage is a romantic retreat - perfect for couples seeking an unforgettable stay. With sweeping views from the battlements and a storybook setting steeped in Welsh culture, this beautifully styled hideaway blends historic charm with modern comfort.

Step inside the elegant interior to find a toasty wood burner for those cosy evenings in, and a deep roll-top bath that’s perfect for long, lazy soaks. This is a place where you can truly unwind, recharge, and reconnect.

Enjoy your morning coffee overlooking the kitchen garden, share a bottle of wine in the secluded courtyard, or eat at the Castle restaurant - 1176, which offers locally sourced produce, with emphasis on the land and water which surrounds the area. Diners can enjoy fresh, seasonal ingredients while supporting local producers. 1176 also boasts stunning views and a wonderful atmosphere.

Cardigan Castle holds a special place in Welsh history—it’s thought to be the first stone castle built by a Welshman. In 1176, Lord Rhys ap Gruffydd threw a legendary celebration to mark its completion, inviting poets, musicians and performers from far and wide. That gathering became the first-ever Eisteddfod, which makes this site both unique and very special.

As a guest of Cardigan Castle, you’ll enjoy exclusive access to the grounds outside visitor hours, plus complimentary entry to any events happening during your stay.
Just a short stroll from the castle, Cardigan town offers an eclectic mix of independent shops, art galleries, and tempting places to eat—from riverside pizzas and homely cafés to a Michelin-starred restaurant. Don’t miss the vibrant arts scene at Theatr Mwldan, or the chance to explore the wild beauty of Cardigan Bay, with its golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, and the breathtaking Ceredigion Coast Path.

Whether you're planning a peaceful escape or a cultural adventure, Gardener’s Cottage is a unique and unforgettable base.

Reviews

“Didn't realise this one bedroom cottage was on two floors, unlike the coach house. We found the wooden stairs slippery if wearing socks. We found the lounge sofas and chairs very uncomfortable. The kitchen could have done with some basic items such as a roll of kitchen roll and a pan scourer.”

“This was our fourth time staying here and we had a wonderful time again. The cottage is maintained to a consistently good standard and the location is idyllic. Staying in the castle grounds is a treat. Cardigan has excellent eateries, a selection of independent shops, and a broad sandy beach is a mile away. Thoroughly recommend.”

“A very attractive property in a beautiful location and with unlimited access to the castle's gardens. It also has a segregated courtyard seating area and a carpark for guests. The kitchen is well appointed and the bed very comfortable.”

“We enjoyed our stay at this lovely location which was enhanced by the beautiful weather, and the restaurant attached to the castle served very nice food along with very friendly and welcoming staff.”

“We have recently returned from a weeks stay at Cardigan Castle. It was an opportunity to visit the area while visiting our daughter and her partner who have just moved near to Cardigan. The accommodation was just what we wanted as a couple. and in an ideal location. Everything that we needed was provided but we did identify a few aspects that were disappointing. These were reported to reception and will hopefully be dealt with to the benefit of future guests. There were also a number of positives, the bed was the most comfortable we have slept on and the fact that we could park on site. The 1176 restaurant was also a bonus but the breakfast menu options are somewhat limited.”

“Weve stayed here twice in the last year and will definitely come again. Lovely to stay in the castle grounds and next to the beautiful river. At the same time, the location is so close to all the shops, excellent eateries and Theatr Mwldan. The beach is a short drive away. A roomy, charming and comfortable cottage for two people, wellequipped with everything you need.”

“We had a lovely relaxing stay in the gardeners cottage. It was perfect for a relaxing weekend where we just wanted to switch off from everything. Being able to wander around the grounds of the castle was lovely, as well as the views across the town. It was a perfect location for accessing all of the towns local amenities and to be able to drive further field as well.”

“Lovely cottage in beautiful castle surroundings. Cosy, comfortable and wellequipped. Located in the heart of the vibrant small town, but the enclosed setting gives privacy and quiet. Next to the river, close to walks through a wetland area and a short drive to the beach.”

“The Gardeners cottage is a wonderful place to stay. Very comfortable, well equipped, luxury accommodation. We loved walking in the castle grounds when all the visitors had left.”

“Perfect few days self catering in the Gardeners Cottage. The castle is small but full of character and charm with so many friendly smiling faces from staff who couldn't do enough to help us. So quiet and peaceful and just what we needed after a troubled few months. Looking forward to another visit soon.”
